The Stearns County Domestic Violence Program is hiring a child advocate to help connect kids who have witnessed violence or other traumatic events with proper mental health care.
“We’re very excited about the opportunity to have child advocates work directly with law enforcement,” said Matthew Engelking, who chairs the juvenile division of the Stearns County Attorney’s Office.
The position is privately funded by two grantors who were not disclosed. Engelking said the advocate will work directly with the St. Cloud Police Department, and officers will be trained to identify when children may need additional services.
The “trauma-informed advocate” will work with children who have been exposed to a traumatic events, including but not limited to domestic abuse, a household fire or a car accident. The advocate will then refer children to proper mental health care providers.
The Central Minnesota Health Center is taking applications for the position, which will start in the spring.
