Suicides on an Indian Reservation [NYTimes.com]

Re “Youth Suicide Reaches Crisis on Reservation” (front page, May 4):

We were greatly saddened to read your article, but not surprised. Those of us who live on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation know that 20 percent of the population here attempts suicide before finishing high school.

When we mention this and other dismal statistics to activist friends, they are stunned. Many of them support relief efforts abroad, but few seem to know much about one of the most impoverished places in America.
