Summit speaker: Kids’ adverse experiences connected to problems later in life - Montana

"If we want to tackle health and social problems as diverse as suicide, obesity, job performance and drug abuse, we need to address experiences that occur very early in life, Dr. Robert Anda told those at a state childhood health summit on Thursday....

“To me, the ACE study is an early warning system for Montana,” Garrison said, noting a national study by Kids Count placed Montana last in child health and 28th among states in overall wellbeing.

"Adverse childhood experiences can account for more than half of occurrences of mental health problems, suicide attempts, drug abuse and more, Anda said. They also increase risk for the major causes of death, including heart disease....

“We know what happens with children, and we have the power in our hands to do something about it,” he said.
