"The Department of Social Services (DSS) and the Child Development Council in Tompkins County are the partner recipients in a grant that will give support to families suspected of child neglect so that they can be better parents. The $101,000 grant from The New York State Office of Children and Family Services is aimed at helping parents become self-sufficient and improving their parenting and problem-solving skills.
"Deana Bodnar, Program Development Specialist at the Department of Social Services, explained how it works. Family Assessment Response (FAR) is a “separate track” from serious cases, like sexual or physical abuse. “Historically, over time the Child Protective Services (CPS) has found that there are two different tracks. In a lot of cases, families just need more support to be good parents.”...
"Furthermore, FAR has the added benefit, by keeping children out of the foster care system, of being cheaper for the state in the long run. “The idea is you’re making referrals to other agencies,” says Bodnar, “and supporting the families to make that connection sooner.”
