I have been writing about the baby's experience for many years. After the book by Brene Brown, Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead came out, I decided that I wanted to be one of the people she wrote about who lived whole-hearted lives. She describes them as people who would not sit by and simply watch life go by, but those who were willing to enter into the arena and dare greatly, erring, getting dirty and fully engaging in life. I wanted to be one of those people. I had longed to teach about my passion, which was the baby's experience starting preconception. I felt I had some significant obstacles to overcome, including convincing people that baby's did indeed have experiences and memories.
Many years later, I am working as an educator and a therapist, involving more and more people in the lives of babies. My specialty is preventing and healing birth trauma. Whenever I teach people about the baby's experience, especially the baby's honest and direct ways of communicating about what has happened, I feel that people nod their head and smile. It is no longer such a huge effort. Researchers, policy makers, practitioners and educators are all working together to make the world a better place for families with babies. The last place we are seeing change is in the birthing room, but I feel that change is coming.
