The East Tennessee ACEs Mobilization Team conducted their first meeting on June 1st, 2018 at the Family Justice Center in Knoxville, TN. Knowledge Mobilization efforts support the culture change related to philosophy, policy, program and practice that ultimately foster healthy child development and meet the Building Strong Brains Training goals.
The Tennessee Building Strong Brains Goals are to: Increase the potential that every child born in Tennessee has the opportunity to lead a healthy, productive life, raise public awareness about ACEs, impact public policy in Tennessee to support prevention of ACEs and to reduce the community conditions that contribute to them. Goals additionally include, supporting innovative local and state projects that offer fresh thinking and provide precise measurement of impact in addressing ACEs and toxic stress in children. Finally, to seek sustainable funding to ensure the state maintains a long-term commitment to reduce in the impact of adverse childhood experiences.
The guest speaker for the first East TN KMT meeting was Becky Haas, ACEs, Educator/Trauma Informed System of Care Development/Crime Prevention Programs/for the Johnson City Police Department. Ms. Haas discussed the steps she has taken in creating a system of care in Johnson City, TN by recognizing potential partnerships, addressing organizational barriers and actions partners have taken which helped them move from trauma-informed to trauma responsive. Following the presentation, Ms. Haas assisted the group of 30 Building Strong Brains T4T Alumni from the East TN area to begin developing an “action plan” to move forward in a similar effort in the East Region of Tennessee.
Becky said, “In raising community awareness of ACEs, those who deliver this message must realize, ACEs training is NOT something that’s taught, but rather, it’s got to be “caught” so advocates of this message must be contagious.
