[Last Sunday "60 Minutes" aired a piece by Oprah Winfrey called, "Treating Childhood Trauma.”]
The follow-up interview with Oprah on "60 Minutes Overtime" is very powerful. She says -- “This story has had more impact on me than practically anything that I have ever done.”
Oprah says that working on this story caused “a revolution” in her own life.
“This story was life-changing for me.”
“What has been life-changing for me is the question, What happened to you?”
“It has changed the way I see everyone."
She deals differently with her employees.
She has a different reaction when she hears about a school shooter.
For Oprah, school was the place where she found the relationships that saw her through a very difficult childhood.
“It was school that made me feel a sense of value and connection."
"Mrs. Duncan (her 4th grade teacher) instilled in me this sense of believing that I mattered, and that is what every human being is looking for.”
For those of us who have been exposed to these ideas for a long time it is easy to forget how impactful they can be for someone who learns about ACEs and adopts a trauma-informed perspective for the first time.
