This fall, Lara Kain and I will co-present a 3 night / 4 day retreat-style training - The Trauma-Informed School 2.0 - in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire. The format and content of this training promises to be unlike most.
We purposely embedded in the training format experiences that reflect the principles of trauma-informed care (i.e. exercises and activities that cultivate psychological safety, connection among participants, and emotional regulation). Participants will learn much of the training content through these guided experiences.
We designed the training to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for guiding cultural change. There is a strong emphasis placed on understanding and developing process skills - a skill-set many don't possess. Lara and I contend this is the reason most change efforts fail.
Understandably, most people don't know how to facilitate the "process" of change. They think that change is just a series of actions steps. They focus almost exclusively on the "what" and fail to recognize the value of the question, 'How?' "How are we feeling?" "How will this be?" "How are we connected?" "How is this change affecting us?"
If we just "do" and don't consider the human experience, we miss the point - especially in trauma-informed change.

Lara and Emily have been working together since last winter, when Cissy White of the ACES Connection suggested they collaborate. Cissy saw that Lara and Emily possessed unique experiences that together, packed a powerful "punch" of purpose. Lara and Emily intend to move forward as a "consulting team" for school clients. This is their first joint training venture.
Lara has extensive experience working in the state of Wisconsin and in the greater LA area to help schools build capacity for being trauma-informed. She designed the Trauma-Informed School Pilot for healthcare leader Kaiser Permanente, currently being implemented in 20 schools across the country.
Emily launched HERE this NOW in July of 2017 to help others build capacity for being trauma-informed. Since then, Emily has gained a reputation as someone that does the work with a perspective and approach that differs from many others. Her clients appreciate the somatic, relational, and process orientation she has to the work.
