What we’re seeing is an avalanche of truth telling from eyewitnesses to the crimes of sexual harassment, sexual abuse and sexual assault. There’s an iceberg moving through our world – it’s eyes glaring out at all of us – wondering if it will be NOW that we, as a people, as a planet full of people – will begin to notice her. Not just notice her but finally do something about her.
Some say this is a tipping point. I say, it’s happened before; O’Reilly, Ailes, Cosby, Clinton, Trump, Sandusky and on & on. Powerful men taking advantage. We shoulda’ tipped decades ago. So, no, I’m not sure this one is the tipping point. But there is a tip.
Let’s get back to that gliding iceberg inching across the headlines. See, as always, it’s only the tip we’re seeing. At the top of that frozen mountain are all the women voicing how they’ve been harmed – and some men and transgendered folks, too. A slice of them twittered #metoo. Great. No, fantastic. Yay! I’m thrilled. From movie stars to Olympians to the gal next door; a purple tornado of women shouting from the top of Berg Perpetration.
Ah, but what’s beneath the surface that can’t or won’t be seen
Put on a wet suit and air tank and dive under the cold waters of social obscurity and find the under layers, such as the ones who aren’t ready to speak. Swim a fathom or two further down to all the battered sex trafficked bodies. Bet most of them don’t have twitter accounts to join in on #metoo.
OK – come back up to the surface – you’re almost out of air. Take a rest, warm up a bit, then put on another tank – a bigger one this time – and grab a buddy, don’t go down alone. And don’t forget a large underwater flashlight.
Swim past all you’ve seen so far, down, down into the depths, down to the foundation of the iceberg – the place where all these other layers have grown out of – there you’ll find the incest and sexual abuse that’s been happening to children for eons and is happening right now. That, my friends, is where all of this is stemming from
So here’s what we have to do: make sure everyone on the tip gets validated for telling, telling and getting people to pay attention. There’ll be a continual avalanche of eyewitnesses. Once the top gets melted down with the warmth of truth and understanding the berg will rise and the next layer gets exposed for what it is, how big it is, and how pervasive it is will be seen
And, more melting.
I am infinitely grateful for all the good and important work around ACE’s that exists in our world. I will not stop hoping that one day everybody is going to finally get it that until we stop sexually harming the children none of this other stuff is going to end. Cause and effect, friends, cause and effect.
