Trauma-Informed Conference and Ceremony in Window Rock April 4-5

Dear Members of the Native American Group --

As the attached notice describes, on April 4th and 5th, a coalition of national and local organizations will host a trauma-informed conference in Window Rock Arizona on the Navajo Reservation. The goal is to promote the implementation of trauma-informed programs on reservations in the Four Corners area, with a particular focus on education, health care, and law enforcement/courts. Called the Four Corners Warrior Spirit Conference and Ceremony, it will include presentations on both trauma-informed programs that have been effective in other tribal communities and traditional healing practices that have worked for thousands of years to address trauma. It also features men’s and women’s sweat lodges and talking circles, two of the traditional practices that have helped Indian people heal for many generations.

The organizations hosting the conference are the Dine Bi Olta School Board Association, the Native American Disability Law Center, the Roundtable on Native American Trauma Informed Initiatives, and Native Health Care Solutions, in partnership with the Indian Health Service Gallup Indian Medical Center Pediatric Clinic and Health Promotion Methamphetamine and Suicide Prevention Initiative (MSPI) Program.

This is the third Warrior Spirit Conference The first was on the Gila River Reservation in Arizona in April 2018, hosted by the Roundtable. The second was on the Viejas Reservation in California, co-hosted by the Viejas Tribe and other California Tribes, was in October 2018. Both were extraordinarily successful, creating momentum for trauma-informed initiatives. We are looking for the same for the 4Corners conference

A copy of the Conference Notice, registration information and the draft agenda are attached. We hope to see many of you there. It will be an opportunity to share ideas and experiences with others who, like you, are committed to bringing trauma-informed programs and traditional healing practices to Native American communities.
