Although front-page headlines are trumpeting a 43% drop in obesity among very young children, some in the pediatric community are challenging that interpretation of the latest NHANES data, noting that obesity remains flat across all age groups.
Asheley Skinner, PhD, professor of pediatrics and health policy at UNC School of Medicine, wrote in a blog post that the prevalence did fall from about 14% in 2003/2004 to 8.5% in 2011/2012 among children ages 2 to 5 -- but the NHANES data from the earlier years was an anomaly.
