Monkey
I was intrigued by these three monkeys as a small child but it has not been till recently that I understood why. It was while I was talking to someone about childhood experiences that the answer came to me.
He told me that at the age of seven he bought those three monkeys at a zoo. His family asked why he bought them when there were so many other cute things to buy. Of course, at the age of seven we don't know why we do things. We just do it.
It was during his reflection on his traumatic childhood experiences that he came to the realization that the monkeys reminded him of his family. See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil. They were in denial! "Oh that didn't really happen, it wasn't that bad, let's just pretend it never happened."
No one in his family seemed to see, hear or speak about the abuse that he was experiencing in his own home. So too with me. Family, neighbors and everyone around me was like one of those monkeys. This is what we learned from them... See no evil... Speak no evil... Hear no evil! Even when we grow up those monkeys are still inside of us. Repeating those words.
How sad.
