Who are we? What's our interest in ACEs? Part 6

As people have joined the network, I've asked them to provide some information about their interest in ACEs. Here are another three: Nancy Hardt, Anthoulla Koutsoudi and Marielle Dekker. Nancy Hardt, Micanopy, FL - Nancy, an ob-gyn and pathologist, thinks that ACES have something to do with premature birth. In trying to figure out ways to break the cycle of domestic violence, she's started screening for IPV in obstetrics and pediatric outpatient settings. The clinics have a law/medicine partnership and help IPV (interpersonal violence) victims with legal issues. The local sheriff and police do lethality assessments at every IPV call. Astonished at "how little of this makes it into medical school curriculum", she's working to change that at the University of Florida College of Medicine.

Anthoulla Koutsoudi, Croyden, United Kingdom -- Anthoulla, an attorney, works with WAVE Trust, a UK charity that advises policy makers and others on how to create primary prevention strategies to prevent ACEs. "We talk about ACE to everyone that will listen! WAVE has shown the link between abusive childhood and adult violence. We must also show the link between ACEs and later health problems if we are to create a better world for our children and grandchildren."

Marielle Dekker, Driebergen, Netherlands -- Marielle notes that "the prevention of ACE's is a main goal of our charity, the Augeo Foundation. In the Netherlands we founded a e-learning academy that teaches nurses and physicians of 70% of the Dutch hospitals how to recognize child abuse and neglect. We are lobbying for better care for abused children, and Vincent Felitti joined us last year and presented his work to Dutch Health Insurance Companies."
