Philadelphia Story: An Ambitious Campaign to Spread Opportunity into All Corners of the City [CommunityCommons.org]

For decades the “Philadelphia Story” was about steady economic decline. That story is being rewritten today as many Americans rediscover 'the advantages of cities—inviting public spaces, rich cultural diversity and a creative environment that fertilizes start-ups and attracts talent. Young people, in particular, have moved here in droves, realizing they can enjoy the same kind of urban amenities as New York, Washington or Boston. New Americans immigrating from other nations also contribute...

How can we help people understand that asking for help is a strength?

I keep thinking the best way to change our current problems with ACE issues is to make a national MANDATORY use of the ACE Survey at all pediatric practices. Yet, someone today said..."Is there any follow-up to the Portland pediatric story?" Are parents following through on getting counseling, etc. after sharing their ACE results? " Does anyone have that information? Because I was getting push back today from the CEO of a big, respected Corporate Wellness coaching firm. He found the ACEs...

A study ranks Oklahoma as one of the worst states in the nation for adverse childhood experiences, Oklahoma Institute for Child Advocacy CEO Joe Dorman said Wednesday, and he said he hopes his organization can reverse that trend. A Googler's Would-Be Manifesto Reveals Tech's Rotten Core [TheAtlantic.com]

An anonymous Google software engineer’s 10-page fulmination against workplace diversity was leaked from internal company communications systems, including an internal version of Google+, the company’s social network, and another service that Gizmodo, which published the full memo , called an “internal meme network.” “I’m simply stating that the distribution of preferences and abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes,” the Googler writes, “and that these differences...

Screening for ACES in Health Care

Many people seem keen to start screening children and adults for ACEs in the hope that we can help them avoid or counteract the negative effects. I have been looking at the experience of screening for other problems, like domestic violence, and there are some cautionary lessons to be learned. We need to be careful about how we go about doing this, and I make some suggestions in the attached article.

Positive Not Negative Feedback

I recently wrote a post on LINKEDIN ( link and text of post are below) designed to encourage positive as opposed to negative feedback. It was inspired by another blog post which I have also linked and the text of the inspirational post below). Indeed, we suffer from negative feedback on many levels. As parents, teachers and employers, positive feedback can improve outcomes, it can ease tension and stress, it can improve work produce and sense of self. One key issue: how do we encourage more...

What Can the Brain Reveal about Gratitude? [GreaterGood.Berkeley.edu]

Imagine you are on the run from a Nazi manhunt and are taken under the protection of a stranger. This stranger spends the winter providing you with food and shelter—even traveling to other towns to relay messages to your family members—yet has no hope or expectation of repayment from you. While your loved ones are systematically ensnared by the Nazi machine, this stranger keeps you alive and nourishes your faith in humanity, offering proof that in the midst of widespread horror, many...

Sikhs in America: A History of Hate [ProPublica.org]

T HE 1907 EPISODE in a seaside timber town in Washington came to be known as the Bellingham Riots. Really, though, there were no riots. There was a pogrom. At the time, the U.S. was suffering through deep economic distress, a panic-filled recession that had begun the year before. Angry anti-immigrant sentiment was ascendant. And hundreds of Sikh men who had traveled from India to Bellingham to toil in the lumber mills paid the price. [For more of this story, written by AC Thompson, go to ...
