Prevention vs. Treatment

For numerous reasons, treatment gets much more attention than prevention. This benefits the purveyors of treatments and those who are suffering, but I don't think it will make much difference ten, twenty, fifty years down the road. I suggest that this new version of PACES Connection focus not on treatment, but on the promotion of positive childhood experiences and the prevention of adverse childhood experiences. Thoughts?

Music & Thoughts To Share - Pirates by Michael Skinner - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vakBStfo5c “Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach.” - Clarissa Pinkola Estes “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” – Jiddu Krishnamurti “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the...

State Support of Child Welfare At Risk In Washington State

WA voters to decide on future of funding source for child care, education Story by Eric Tegethoff, Public News Service, October 24, 2024 Washington voters are deciding on the fate of the state's capital gains tax this election. The tax supports child care and schools. If passed, Initiative 2109 would repeal a 7% tax on capital gains for assets worth more than $250,000. Supporters of the repeal said capital gains taxes are volatile and it could lead to an income tax down the road. Wesley...

How to Practice Self-Compassion at Work

Accept your full humanity at work. To become a happier, more resilient worker, try these self-compassion techniques when you feel you’ve missed the mark. “ I blew it .” It’s a universal feeling because we’ve all been there. We think, “Everyone else gets it, but I don’t,” or “How does everyone else manage when I’m barely keeping up?” We feel like we don’t measure up, we should be doing more and doing it better. It’s easy to push, prod, guilt and beat ourselves up for making mistakes or...

How to Transform Your Inner Critic into a Powerful Tool for ACE Healing

We all have an inner voice that comments on our actions, judges our decisions, and sometimes holds us back. Commonly referred to as the “inner critic,” this voice can be both an ally and an adversary. It’s part of the human experience and has a lifetime membership, offering feedback that can encourage growth or lead to self-doubt. The key to managing the inner critic isn’t denying its presence or trying to quiet it entirely. This would be impossible. Instead, the key lies in understanding...

By JAY REDDICK | jreddick@orlandosentinel.com | Orlando Sentinel PUBLISHED: October 19, 2024 at 5:30 a.m. How do we manage what is coming the day after voting, with the anticipated conflicted feelings? This is my response. Years ago in couples therapy I learned that when I reacted to another’s poor behavior with my own angry, vengeful response, I received the “counseling.” This felt unfair. “Hey wait! Why am I getting feedback when they behaved badly?” I learned that I needed to manage my...
