This 90-minute training is focused on the implications of PREA for mental health care leaders and is part of the NCCHC Correctional Mental Health Care Conference.
The National Standards to Prevent, Detect, and Respond to Prison Rape provide medical and mental health staff with a blueprint for responding to sexual abuse in detention. The standards also offer guidance in how medical and mental health staff can be a part of making facilities safer by participating in efforts to prevent and detect sexual abuse. This presentation will cover the trauma-informed, coordinated response model outlined in the standards. Using real-life examples, exercises, video, and lessons learned from the field, presenters will engage participants in discussions and exercises, making the material applicable to their daily work. Participants will also learn about the unique impact of sexual trauma and how the experience of being incarcerated presents particular challenges for survivors of such abuse and those charged with treating them.
The Correctional Mental Health Care Conference has been created by and for correctional mental health professionals. Correctional institutions are bearing a huge burden in mental health because of the lack of mental health resources in the community. Psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors and social workers involved in corrections will have a unique opportunity to learn from each other in two full conference days and in ample networking.
