Many agencies, such as shelters, drop-in services, community health agencies, and various residential programs, serve women who are traumatized by interpersonal abuse. What to do, when these circumstances intersect with systemic oppression, drug use, conflict with the law, poverty, and unstable housing? This vortex of human complexity often strains workers and agencies to the max. Where do you start as a worker? Finding clarity in the midst of competing needs and demands is a struggle.
This workshop will offer the integration of trauma informed practices within a harm reduction framework. This can help workers stay anchored to client-centered practices despite the chaos of navigating risky behaviours and systemic barriers, while creating a therapeutic relationship to address substance use. We will examine advocacy within the criminal justice system and broader impacts of criminalization. We will also look at the ins and outs of street drug use, areas of risk and practical strategies to reduce harm and increase personal safety and power.
