This one-day program trains mental health professionals, juvenile and criminal justice professionals, social and juvenile services agencies, educators, and others to apply current research pertaining to risk assessment with juveniles. Topics covered include theoretical foundations regarding risks among youth, review of legal parameters involved with assessment of risks, impact of online behavior, and student threats.
At the conclusion of the program participants will be able to
- Identify differences and similarities between risk assessments and threat assessments with juveniles
- Identify some legal parameters involved with assessing juvenile violence risk
- Discuss an evidence-based model of threat assessment in schools
- Define base rates and risk factors for violence in juveniles in services
- Discuss forensic aspects of risk assessment with juveniles including uses of structured risk assessment instruments
- Identify how understanding online behavior may contribute to assessment of risks with juveniles
Faculty for this full-day program will be Janet Warren DSW, Professor, School of Medicine, UVA; Sara Boyd PhD, Forensic Psychologist in private practice and with the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy in the School of Medicine, UVA; and Dewey Cornell PhD, Professor, Curry School of Education, UVA.
