Two Half Day Training Classes
1) Developing Leadership in the Field of Violence and Abuse
8:00 AM - 12:00 NOON
Presenters: Tasneem Ismailji, Susan Kelley, F. David Schneider, Agnes Tiwari
Description This interactive half-day workshop is taught by AVA Board Members with many years of leadership experience in nursing, medicine and non-profit organizations. Health Science and Nursing School Deans Kelley and Tiwari, AVA Past Presidents Schneider and Ismailji use an interactive approach to address:
- Theories and styles of leadership
- Roles for leaders and how to impact the field
- Non-coercive negotiating skills seeking win-win outcomes
- Mentoring future leaders
- Advocacy skills needed to advance the field both nationally and internationally
- Story boarding as a leadership tool for creating change
The goal of this dynamic workshop is to help prepare participants for leadership roles in the interdisciplinary fields addressing violence and abuse across the lifespan. We hope you will join us!
2) Using Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study DVD and the ACE's "Next Steps White Paper" for Educating Professionals, Policy Makers and the Public 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Presenters: David Corwin, Vincent Felitti, Tasneem Ismailji
Description This workshop reviews the contents, uses, presenter’s experiences and perspectives on educating professionals, policy makers, and the public about the ACE Study findings and implications for improving health. The ACE Study DVD was developed by the Academy on Violence and Abuse (AVA) and the “ACEs: Informing Best Practice White Paper” is a product of the AVA and the National Health Collaborative on Violence and Abuse. The workshop is designed to help participants present this information and these resources to their own professional and other communities.
Learning Objectives
- Document the high prevalence of unrecognized adverse life experiences in childhood.
- Discuss the significant Public Health Paradox wherein the conventional 'problem' represents an unconsciously chosen 'solution' by the individual.
- Illustrate their profound effect on adult health and well-being, decades later.
