Website/URL: http://www.supremecourt.ne.gov...nile-court-need-know

Organized By: Through the Eyes of the Child Initiative - a project of the Nebraska Supreme Court

Description:

There is consensus that a high percentage of individuals in the court system have experienced serious trauma at some point in their lifetime. The reverberating effects of traumatic experiences can challenge a person’s capacity for recovery and pose significant barriers to utilizing services.

This lecture will examine the various impacts of trauma on the court process. It will begin with a look at trauma throughout the life span, from birth to parenthood. It will include the manifestations of trauma, as well as the appropriate treatment for these different developmental stages.

The purpose providing this educational session to child welfare and court system professionals is to:

  • Increase understanding and awareness of the impact of trauma,
  • Develop appropriate responses to those who have been negatively impacted by traumatic events; and,
  • Provide strategies for developing and implementing policies that accommodate the needs of individuals impaired by traumatic events.

Trauma-informed child welfare and court system responses can help to avoid re-traumatizing individuals, decrease reoffending, and increase community safety.
