Book Launch—Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools [NYC, NY]

For four years Monique W. Morris has chronicled the experiences of black girls across the country whose intricate lives are misunderstood, highly judged—by teachers, administrators, and the justice system—and degraded by the very institutions charged with helping them flourish. In her new book Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools (New Press), Morris shows how, despite obstacles, stigmas, stereotypes, and despair, black girls still find ways to breath remarkable dignity into their lives in classrooms, juvenile facilities, and beyond.

Please join us for the launch of Pushout. The author will be in conversation with Joanne N. Smith, founder and executive director of Girls for Gender Equity (GGE), as well as three young women from GGE who will speak about how school pushout impacts their day-to-day life and the work that is being done to change school climate.
