Breaking Night is a memoir that takes the reader from the slums of the Bronx, to rent by-the-hour motels, apartment stairways and eventually the halls of Harvard University. Liz Murray was born to drug-addicted parents in a home where the monthly welfare check was spent within the week and Liz and her sister, Lisa, survived on mayonnaise sandwiches. Eventually her family and life are in disarray, and Liz finds herself homeless, skipping school and scraping by through the charity of strangers and friends.
While living on the streets, Liz learns that her mother has passed away from AIDS. It is then she makes the decision to go back to school and take control of her life. Liz starts her high school career at 17 years old and through the encouragement of numerous teachers, graduates from high school in two years – all while secretly homeless.
