About this event

Welcome to Building Healthy, Equitable Communities Through Transforming the School Climate, in which we'll explore school policies and practices that promote safe, nurturing, and healthy learning environments for all. We kicked off the conversation by blogging about promising policy avenues to transform the physical and social environments in schools and promote healthy development of the whole child. Now we invite you to join us for this webinar, in which we'll look at why exclusionary school discipline policies are a public health crisis. Together, we'll discuss

  • The impact of adverse childhood experiences and trauma on children's well-being
  • How exclusionary school discipline policies can compound health inequities
  • Promising alternatives to punitive discipline policies that can transform the school climate

This webinar will feature two exciting guest speakers. Kristen Harper of Child Trends will discuss the disproportionality in exclusionary school discipline (ESD) practices and its harmful effects, as well as share policy efforts (past and present) to address the issue at various government levels. Linda Darling-Hammond of the Learning Policy Institute will share her expertise on promising alternatives to ESD practices that advance equity, with an emphasis on social and emotional learning.

Be sure to register for the expert panel, where we'll continue the conversation. Our experts will examine innovative strategies to manage school discipline, involve students, and promote health and equity in schools. In addition, the panelists will address your questions and consider hot topics that emerged from the blog and webinar.

This is the fifth episode of a 6-part series. To learn more about other elements of a healthy, equitable community, check out the other episodes here.

Please note that we will automatically add you to our list to receive email updates about the series and new tools for change. You can opt out on the registration form.
