A Summit on Adverse Childhood Experiences in California
When children thrive, we all thrive. Unfortunately, too many children in California and across the country are exposed to trauma and adverse experiences that, if left unaddressed, can lead to toxic stress and lifelong problems with health, wellness and learning.
From November 5-7, 2014, more than 200 health professionals, policy leaders and advocates will gather in San Francisco forChildren Can Thrive: California's Response to Adverse Childhood Experiences. The summit is intended to advance a statewide dialogue about the biggest public health problem facing California today – Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)—and craft a common agenda to reduce the impact of childhood trauma.
ACEs are traumatic experiences, such as abuse, neglect and household dysfunction, which can result in toxic stress and have a profound effect on a child’s developing brain and body. Research shows that nearly two-thirds of Californians have reported at least one adverse childhood experience. Data on ACEs show the scope of the problem, but also highlight the opportunity we have to build resilience and heal children’s minds and bodies.
