Treatment admissions for opiates other than heroin rose 450% from 1998 to 2008 with 7 million Americans reporting nonmedical use of prescription drugs more than the number using all other drugs combined.  Opiates provide trauma survivors with powerful tools to facilitate cognitive, emotional, and behavioral avoidance which perpetuate Posttraumatic Stress Disorder symptoms. This workshop will provide participants with an overview of the opiate/opioid problem in Western New York and evidence-based treatments that the instructor utilizes in practice to effectively address these co-occurring issues.  Course reflects AHRQ evidence levels A and C.  Learning Objectives: Learn what opiates and opioid medications are, their use, and pharmacological functions; Understand the nature of progressive opiate/opioid addiction; Learn protocols and resources for opiate replacement therapies; Gain a full understanding of the relationship between traumatic experiences, complex trauma response and opiate/opioid use; Learn how to facilitate Integrated Opiate Dependence, Schema Focused, and Exposure Based Treatments.
