Join us this week as we discuss living with Dissociative Identity Disorder with special guest, Christine McAteer!
What is DID?
A mental health condition, people with dissociative identity disorder (DID) have two or more separate personalities. These identities control a person’s behavior at different times. DID can cause gaps in memory and other problems. Various types of psychotherapy can help people manage the symptoms of DID.
More about Christine:
My name is Christine Geralyn McAteer and I am a trauma survivor and
the author of Daddy Sir! the memoir of my life.
I am a happy, functioning, individual who has lived through incest and physical abuse. I live a full life and am married to a wonderful partner.
I also have dissociative identity disorder (DID.)
I was raised in rural Texas in the 1960s. The third of seven children I was molested by my father at the age of two and grew up being
sexually abused by my father, uncle, grandfather, and oldest brother. I
cared for and raised my younger brothers and sisters. I also cared for
an extremely reliant and chronically ill mother. I attended Catholic
school off and on for eight years and my experiences there were
traumatic.
I have spent years in therapy and have done a lot of inner healing. I
meditate daily and find it is essential in my life. I currently live in
northern New Jersey and between therapy, meditation, and
the psychotropic medication my DID is stable and I use it as a springboard
to reach out to others who have DID.
I have a podcast where I talk
about the unique challenges of navigating life with DID. I am a person
who has discovered that healing is a journey well worth taking and life
is valuable and extraordinary.
I am currently working on another book in which I detail the
experiences of my alters. I am determined to reach out to others who
have DID and to their family members and friends who want to know
more about it.
Chris has a podcast called Hearts in Recovery
