Considering the many drivers of sexual and domestic violence, it’s clear that one sector or field cannot prevent the issue alone. In 2018, the Blue Shield of California Foundation (BSCF) expanded its commitment to end domestic violence by focusing on root causes of violence and supporting communities in preventing domestic violence. In this web conference, we’ll engage with practitioners and advocates from two community partnerships in California, supported by BSCF, who are building their capacity to implement culturally-rooted prevention strategies. Veva Islas is a newcomer to domestic violence prevention with a long history of implementing culturally-rooted policy, systems, and environmental change strategies to promote healthy eating and active living. She will share how her Mujeres Poderosas Amorosas collaborative is developing culture-change strategies for domestic violence prevention. MaiBao Yang and Dee Lee will share how their CHAN-BOF For Peace Collaborative is using their expertise in the domestic violence field to work with the Hmong community to challenge and change harmful gender norms and promote healthy relationships.
