The impact of climate change on physical health are everywhere ranging from fires to floods to fireborn respiratory and cardiovascular disease. Emerging documentation is revealing the obvious, that climate change affects our mental health as well and is impacting millions worldwide. Living through extreme weather events such as a hurricanes, wildfires, floods or droughts can be traumatizing. The stress, anxiety and fear of such events occurring continues to grow as global temperatures continue to break records. These concerns are affecting not only psycho-emotional states but decision making about where we live and choices about having children and vocational decisions continue to grow.

It is because of the growing impact on both psychological and physical well being that we felt called to offer a webinar on this topic and chose a leading expert in the field who is training and certifying mental health practitioners in climate psychology. Here are some of the topics we will explore together.

  • We begin by introducing the evidence behind climate stress and an introduction into the field of Climate Psychology.
  • We explore the importance of understanding, acknowledging and normalizing Climate Emotions with clients.
  • We specify the effects of both direct, indirect and vicarious stress and trauma.
  • We discuss using the tools, including EFT, to assist our clients in working with the ongoing traumatic effects of experienced climate related trauma and the effects of Anticipatory Anxiety.
  • We talk about ways to increase emotional resilience for those impacted by heightened sensitivity and the re-triggering of past experiences.
  • We inquire into the importance of activating internal and external coping strategies and offer a number of examples.
  • We look at how is climate stress affecting different generations in unique ways.
  • We explore neuroregulation mechanisms and adaptive skills and explain why they are critical elements for providing Climate Stress Informed services.
  • We discuss "taking action" vs altering "being-ness" in relation to Climate Stress.
  • We name Social Justice Foundations involved when considering that climate change disproportionately affects marginalized communities.
