What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress. It is an effective treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR is a proven theraputic intervention that activates the natural healing process for trauma-impacted individuals. Studies show deeper healing in as few as three sessions.
Disparities in mental health access?
Here are three mistaken assumptions: Improvement in health care access alone will reduce disparities, the use of trauma-informed models diminish the importance of needing a diverse pool of therapist in order to match clientβs preferences, and evidence-based interventions are readily available for diverse populations by therapists wIth a shared identity.
Why this training?
This EMDR training covers diversity and cultural considerations. We are intentional about recognizing and addressing these topics throughout every section of the training: racial trauma, cultural norms, and mental healthcare disparities that exist in marginalized communities.
We center racial trauma within the wide range of our specialty areas including grief, perinatal mental health, trauma based identity dysmorphia, generational trauma, the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQIA community, and the mental health impact of mass incarceration within the Black community.
Who is this training for?
This training is for Therapist of Color serving marginalized populations. Like other areas of medicine, mental health treatment and access have been shaped by racism and prejudice. Research has documented disproportionate rates of mental illness and underrepresentation for those who are from communities of color along with challenges of uniformity in diagnostics.
We are deliberate in our efforts to build a community of therapists with varied backgrounds to become EMDR certified and serve as consultants and trainers themselves. We believe that this is the most effective way to disrupt disparities and the lack of access to communities of communities.
When?
Our next two training cycles:
Feb 25-27 & Apr 15-17
Mar 25-27 & May 13-15
