Evidence-based tips on identifying, assessing, and providing brief interventions (SBIRT) relevant to a variety of clinical settings, including family medicine, employee assistance, school-based counseling services, and specialist outpatient addiction services. Findings from initial clinical trials examining the effect of adding cannabinoids in inpatient and community settings on cannabis withdrawal and cannabis use will also be discussed.

Marijuana (cannabis) and its many preparations are among the most widely used and discussed psychoactive drugs globally.  While most cannabis use is experimental and occasional, 13.1 million people globally (around 4 million in the United States) experience cannabis use disorder (CUD).  As levels of cannabis use are rising, particularly daily use, CUD is a growing public health concern.  A consequence of the recent policy debates is the misperception that cannabis is not addictive. This is incorrect and stigmatizing, and it creates barriers to help for those experiencing problems controlling their cannabis use. Around 1 in 10 of those who ever try cannabis will go on to develop problems and half of those using daily will meet criteria for CUD.  It is, therefore, vital that evidence-based information be available to all of those who may be in contact in their professional lives with people experiencing problems with their cannabis use. This needs to be followed up with access to best practice tools to screen, assess, and provide brief interventions to assist  cannabis users in managing their cannabis-related problems.

Attend this free webinar led by Jan Copeland, PhD, a research psychologist and an
Honorary Professor at the University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia, and the Director of Cannabis Information and Support. She is an expert in the development, evaluation, and translation of clinical tools and brief interventions for cannabis-related problems for adults and adolescents. The intervention is evidence-based and suitable for people at any point on the spectrum of CUD from mild to severe, whether formally diagnosed or not. She will provide an overview of the evidence for psycho-social and pharmacological interventions for CUD and introduce you to the major concepts outlined in the new clinical resource Marijuana Brief Intervention: An SBIRT Approach.

After the webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe cannabis use disorder
  • Understand the evidence for effective psychosocial (and emerging pharmacological) interventions for cannabis-related problems including withdrawal management
  • Provide an overview of the Marijuana Brief Intervention: An SBIRT Approach resource, that includes from 1-6 sessions:

Session 1: Cannabis and You
Session 2: Preparation for Change
Session 3: Strategies for Change
Session 4: Managing Withdrawal
Session 5: Putting It All Together
Session 6: Relapse Prevention
