A Dialogue for African-American Men and their Advocates

There is growing public attention and research on the impact of early abuse and neglect on children’s lives and futures.  These struggles can repeat across generations of families confronting poverty and historical trauma. This full-day exploration of solutions and strengths to these challenges build on what our community already knows about supporting children and healing the community.

In 2010, The Science Museum of Minnesota and the University of Minnesota teamed up to create Wonder Years: the Science of Early Childhood Development.  This exhibit provides another opportunity for our community to heal by learning more about the critical importance of early childhood and development in the lives of our children, our families and our entire community.

On Friday, May 3, African-American men and their advocates are invited to gather for a day together to meet in fellowship, build relationships, and talk about how to help our community and its young children.

During the meeting some time will be devoted to briefing participants on the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACES). ACES is a landmark research and community-change effort which is gathering steam here in Minnesota.  The Study provides insights into brain development science and intergenerational struggles, and offers a path forward to shift thinking from blame to prevention.  This gathering is meant to be a positive step along a pathway where African American men can realize their own solutions and power. You will also learn more about hosting free visits to the WONDER YEARS exhibit.
