Unfortunately, several horrific cases of child abuse here in Maryland have garnered national attention over the last couple of months. In August 2021, a Baltimore City court sentenced a parent to 30 years in prison for the death and disposal of her 4-year-old son in 2019. In July 2021, two children were found dead in the trunk of their aunt’s car after a routine traffic stop by Baltimore County Police. In these, like in many other child abuse cases, the child victims all suffered extreme forms of abuse at the hands of their parents and/or immediate caregivers. In fact, it is estimated that about 91% of child abuse victims here in the United States are maltreated by one or both of their parents.
Despite continued evidence of violence against children, reports of child maltreatment have decreased during the COVID-19 health emergency. Participants attending the Family Tree's child maltreatment webinar will explore the characteristics of child maltreatment, understand the indicators of abuse, discuss the role of mandated reporting and learn how to report. By the end of this webinar, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of child maltreatment, the child abuse reporting process, and the responsibilities of a Mandated Reporter here in state of Maryland.
