The practices of mindfulness, contemplative education, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) are now being widely explored in schools throughout the United States and other countries. Extensive research has shown that mindfulness practices and SEL decrease stress, attention deficit issues, depression, anxiety, and hostility in children, while benefitting health, well-being, and social relationships.
Research also shows that SEL supports an 11% rise in student academic scores while mindfulness-based education has been shown to foster the inner skills of attention, compassion, impulse-control, and executive functioning. Now many SEL and mindfulness programs are utilizing the strengths of both modalities to create integrative approaches to support healthy students, teachers, and schools.
In this conference we convene seminal leaders in the fields of mindfulness in education and Social-Emotional Learning. We learn the ways mindfulness and SEL can strengthen inner resilience, which in turn can help create more peaceful and equitable schools. We also explore how these tools can help us teach students with diverse backgrounds, learning styles, and abilities. When taught together, mindfulness and SEL have the potential to transform our education systems and our world.
Through inspiring keynote lectures, question-and-answer sessions, group exercises, breakout workshops, a panel with school administrators and principals, and instruction in practical application, we explore:
- Connecting mindfulness and SEL
- Restorative justice
- The science supporting mindfulness and SEL
- Supporting healthy and thriving school climates
- School-based social inclusion
- Indigenous perspectives on mindfulness and education
- Ways of integrating mindfulness and SEL in school system
Participants are invited to share their own work at a poster session on Saturday.
