More Than a Few Good Men: A Lecture on American Manhood and Violence Against Women with Dr. Jackson Katz, Ph.D.

This training will introduce participants to a creative new way of conceptualizing the role of men in what historically have been considered "women's issues." Instead of seeing sexual and domestic violence as women's issues that some "good guys" help out with, he argues that they are men's issues, about which all men should be educated and active - especially men in positions of family, community, professional and political leadership.

With a combination of lecture, written and oral exercises, and interactive discussion, Dr. Katz shares with participants a series of strategies for inspiring men, young men, and boys to work in collaboration with women to change the social norms that tolerate or condone some men's sexist or abusive behaviors. The training also features a segment on the crucial role of media literacy in the prevention of gender violence and bullying. Katz uses clips from his award-winning educational films, including Tough Guise, Wrestling With Manhood, and Spin The Bottle, to spark discussion about the importance of understanding - and changing - the cultural environment in which boys/men (and girls/women) learn sexist beliefs and abusive behaviors.

About the Presenter
Jackson Katz, PhD, is an educator, author, filmmaker, and social theorist who has long been recognized as one of America's leading anti-sexist male activists. He holds academic degrees from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in cultural studies and education from UCLA. In 1993 he conceived and co-founded the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program at Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society. The multi-racial, mixed gender MVP program was the first large-scale attempt to enlist high school, collegiate, and professional athletes in the fight against all forms of men's violence against women. Today MVP is the most widely utilized gender violence prevention program in college and professional athletics. Katz is one of the key architects of the "bystander" approach to gender violence prevention. MVP was one of the first programs to utilize this approach, which is now mainstream practice in the sexual and domestic violence prevention fields.
This training is being held at Quinnipiac University, North Haven Campus - 370 Basset Road, North Haven, CT 06473. For directions go to:
