The ‘One of the Family’ programme raises awareness of the link between animal cruelty and human violence. The program has been a huge success all over the country. With New Zealand’s astonishing rate of family violence, Norm has stepped up and has a great way of teaching children and adults kindness and empathy towards animals and shows them how to teach each other the same way. The SPCA believes that teaching children to empathise with animals is the most effective way to teach children to empathise with each other – a key factor in achieving a cohesive population.
‘One of the Family’ focuses on crucial life-skills and behaviours, it focuses on caring, nurturing, communication, respect for life, cooperation, socialisation, self-esteem, a sense of achievement and building empathy for others. The message can be used everyday in all sorts of situations. If you have a children or animals yourselves or work with children or any organisation who connects with youth or family with violence, or you just want a great night out and want to support the ‘One of the Family’ message and the SPCA then come along to an evening with Norm Hewitt - former New Zealand All Black.
