This will be the second ACES Community Educational Forum sponsored by SDBHA; our first was in 2016. This session has been entitled Pathways to Resilience: Dispelling the Baggage of Adverse Childhood Experiences
This forum is an outgrowth of the Men’s Health Project, a San Diego Black Health Associates (SDBHA) initiative that has sought to address information, reshape attitudes and stimulate changes in behavior as a result of interacting with our programs. We met Dr. Vince Felitti and the research team from the Centers for Disease Control and prevention several years ago. His presentation at our conference last year was a stunning success. We were encouraged to continue with this effort.
Keynote Speakers:
Mr. Godwin Higa, Principal, Cherokee Point Elementary School
Mr. Higa will show how he has implemented trauma informed systems at Cherokee Point since 2011. During the past five years, the suspension rate has declined to the point where there have been no suspensions in the past three years.
Dr. Cheryl Grills, Past President, National Association of Black Psychologists
Dr. Grills is a noted research specialist in Traditional African Healing and will show how she has been a driving force behind Emotional Emancipation Circles as a therapeutic approach to improving the mental health status of people of African descent.
Dr. Dennis Muhammad, CEO/Founder of The Peacekeepers Global initiative
Dr. Muhammad will explain how the Peacekeepers emphasize values and strategies for young men who are trapped in lower income communities, struggling with equity and fighting to break into or get back to productive society, and manage a productive life.

Black Men’s Health Matters:
Black men die faster, younger and harder from almost everything, and it’s our own responsibility. From the time we were brought here we’ve been marked for early death. As true warriors and kings, we used to fight it, but now we seem to have given in. No one is coming to save us but us!
Now is the time tofight for your LIFE.
