Target Audience:

Licensed Health Care Professionals (Physicians, Nurses, Advance Practice Registered Nurses, Physician Assistants), Community Health and Public Health Providers, Federally-qualified Health Centers, Home Visitors, Tribal Health Organizations, College of Public Health, health professions students, and other interested parties.

Purpose Statement:

Severe early stress and adversity have significant impact on brain development, risk behaviors, and health outcomes.

Bruce Perry, M.D, Ph.D., of the ChildTrauma Academy (CTA; http://childtrauma.org/ ) in Houston, Texas joins us to explore the science and evidence of the Adverse Childhood Experiences studies showing the effects of social and emotional trauma in childhood are pervasive and potentially profound. Dr. Perry will share his internationally-acclaimed work and that of the CTA in developing clinical approaches to address the behavioral, emotional, and developmental consequences of adversity and trauma early in life. Also included:

 Methods for health professionals to assess,·

and address, early childhood stress and trauma in the pediatric medical home;

 Services and resources available to clinicians and families through the Nebraska Early Development Network to aid the family in assessment, evaluation, and intervention;·

 The role of evidence-based home visiting programs in engaging and supporting parents;·

 Life course and community-based perspectives on helping parents and children adapt to emotional trauma and severe stress.·
