This presentation will serve as a primer for organizations that are interested in creating a trauma-informed organizational culture using the Sanctuary Model.  Exposure to adversity significantly impacts brain development, mental and behavioral health and overall physical wellbeing.  Organizations that provide services to people who have experienced adversity can either advance or reduce the effects of their exposure. Adversity exists at every level of an organization from its clients to its staff, leadership and board of directors, and extending beyond to the external environment the organization functions in.  Most organizations are not equipped to manage multiple internal and external stressors, yet they are charged with managing adversity faced by the clients they serve.  The Sanctuary Model helps to build capacity within the organization to better serve its clients and carry out its mission, by developing a greater aptitude to understand, manage and mitigate the effects of adversity.

Presenter: Lorelei Atalie Vargas, MPP, MA is the Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at Andrus.  During her 10 year tenure with Andrus Ms. Vargas has led the Yonkers Early Childhood Initiative, managed Andrus’ early childhood program and mental health division; and led the development of the Andrus Center for Learning and Innovation and the Sanctuary Institute.   She has close to twenty years of experience working with nonprofit organizations that are committed to mitigating the adversity faced by children.
