THE COWART TRAUMA INFORMED PARTNERSHIP PRESENTS:
TRAUMA INFORMED CARE IN ADAPTIVE SPORTS
This training is ideal for all those who work or volunteer in adaptive sports programs, including management, administrators, instructors, coaches, ambassadors, recreational therapists, and board members. It will address simple changes that the organization and individuals can make to ensure athletes feel safe and supported in your programs.
The session will introduce the topic of trauma-informed care in adaptive sports instruction, and will include:
o An explanation of what trauma is and why it matters in relation to adaptive sports instruction;
o An overview of the effects of trauma and how it can present; and
o Concrete tools to help instructors and snow sports schools:
• Make changes to their program space based on trauma-informed principles;
• Avoid the retraumatization of athletes;
• Help athletes regulate their emotions;
• De-escalate situations when necessary; and
• Help athletes build resilience.

About Christine:
Christine Cowart, MA, CTP, CARSS I, is a certified trauma professional and a member of the ACEs Connection's Speakers and Trainers Bureau. She has built a career in the human services field, with a focus on criminal justice and family services policy. Through this work, she developed an in-depth understanding of trauma, its possible effects, and what can be done to change the story. In her personal life, she is married and a mother of two children with traumatic backgrounds. For almost two decades, most of her free time has been spent volunteering as a certified adaptive recreation and sports specialist.
