Trauma’s Impact on Children: Brain Development, Behaviors and Interventions will be held at the Southwest Research and Outreach Center

A workshop on Trauma’s Impact on Children: Brain Development, Behaviors and Interventions will be held at the Southwest Research and Outreach Center on Monday, Nov. 10, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The workshop will focus on the trauma resulting from childhood life experiences including abuse, neglect, witnessing violence, and having family members who are incarcerated.

University of Minnesota featured speakers include Kathleen Thomas and Abigail Gewirtz. Dr. Thomas is an associate professor of Child Psychology at the Institute of Child Development and director of the Cognitive Development and Neuroimaging Lab. Dr. Gewirtz is an associate professor in Family Social Science, College of Education and Human Development and is director of both the Institute for Translational Research in Children’s Mental Health and Graduate Studies, Prevention Science Minor.

The workshop is designed for professionals including those in K-12 education, public health, mental health, social work and social services, early childhood and others seeking more information on how traumatic life experiences impact children. CEUs for participants include a Certificate of Attendance documenting five hours.

This workshop is coordinated by the University of Minnesota Extension and the Southwest Research and Outreach Center in partnership with the University’s Center for Neurobehavioral Development, Institute for Translational Research in Children's Mental Health and Children, Youth and Family Consortium.

The workshop includes lunch. Preregistration is required by Monday, Nov. 3, and attendance is limited to 85 people.
