The news covers acts of bullying in schools, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and other forms of interpersonal violence that make us feel unsafe in our homes and communities. If we know someone who has been harmed, we want to help but aren’t sure what to do. The first of two webinars in a series will discuss how to address current acts of violence. It begins with critical background on adverse experiences within families and communities that are common predictors of interpersonal violence across the lifespan, strategies for addressing dating violence on campus, trauma-informed institutions, and treatment for mitigating harm to those involved in violence, and critical public policies for making our responses to interpersonal violence trauma-informed, inclusive and accessible to all in need.
The second webinar will focus on strategies for preventing violence. It starts by providing an overview of what we know about resilience, protective factors that support resilience, and how resilience can be used as a powerful factor in the prevention of violence. Upstream solutions that focus on common risk factors for violence across the lifespan will be outlined, along with how each of us could play a role in helping to make our communities resilient and safe. Public policies that are needed to support this approach will be discussed.
