Understanding and Overcoming Influences of Poverty on Children and Families

As part of a larger campaign recognizing the 50th Anniversary of the “War on Poverty,” the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Office on Socioeconomic Status and Violence Prevention Office have partnered to present a free 60-minute Webinar in Commemoration of World Poverty Day.  We are inviting professionals who work with low-income children and families in different capacities and settings and are interested in understanding 1) the neurological and psychological effects of poverty; 2) consequences of poverty on child development and family socialization; and 3) how to bolster resilience related to environmental stressors associated with poverty.

Webinar Panelists:


Daniel Marston, PhD, ABPP   Dr. Marston is a Cognitive/Behavioral Psychologist and owner of Marston Psychological Services, LLC.  His research and training interests are primarily in the areas of neurological and psychological effects of poverty.

Roseanne Flores, PhD   Dr. Flores is a Developmental Psychologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Hunter College of the City University of New York.  Her research examines the effect of poverty on children's cognitive and linguistic development;  the influence of parent-child discourse practices; and the relationship between environmental risk factors, such as community violence and food insecurity on the health and educational outcomes of minority children.

I didn't see this event until 12 days after it took place. I would very much have liked to have attended, and to have learned about poverty's impact on neurodevelopment, etc.... After working at an OEO Legal services project, then serving two "tours" in the "War On Poverty" (as a VISTA Volunteer), learning about this would have helped my understanding of current  situations and tasks.....
