Through the SFFSN Training Needs Assessment process, members expressed a strong interest in exploring the impact of trauma and violence on families. In response, the SFFSN Training Committee has planned for the SFFSN to offer this new training.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) refer to experiences of abuse, neglect, and violence that a person has had as a child. The traumatic effects of ACEs persist through adulthood and can negatively affect a person’s relationships with his/her children and other family members. In this new interactive training, Janine Greer, Health Educator from the Center for Youth Wellness will help us explore: (a) how ACEs affect children and families, (b) how we can empathize with children and families affected by ACEs, and (c) how best to support families with ACEs.

Participants will:

-- Identify how inter-generational trauma, vicarious trauma and personal ACEs contribute to toxic stress.

-- Identify how chronic stress impacts the healthy development of a child and the benefits of early intervention and community support.

-- Create a self-care plan in order to ensure effective and sustainable service delivery when serving disenfranchised communities.

-- Discover how community-based workers are uniquely positioned to build support systems that form resiliency and allow a child to thrive.

-- Learn and role-play strategies for working with children and families who have experienced trauma and toxic stress.
