Despite the challenge, psychologists are expected to assess and manage violence risk in their patients. Research has found that the therapeutic relationship can modulate violence if the clinician has adequate training in the treatment of violent patients. This intermediate workshop provides an in-depth understanding of: (a) developmental issues contributing to violence, (b) state-of-the-art assessment techniques, (c) case-management strategies, and (d) empirically supported treatments of violent individuals.
Learning Objectives
1. Comprehend the core dynamics operating in clients at risk for violent behavior;
2. Identify clients’ negative thought patterns that influence self-destructive and violent behavior;
3. Utilize assessment and interview techniques based on static and dynamic risk factors to effectively identify those at greatest risk for violent behavior;
4. Adapt treatment to the client’s type of violence for more effective treatment outcomes;
5. Plan crisis intervention and case management with violent or potentially violent clients;
6. Employ an innovative/cognitive/affective/behavioral approach for treating violent clients; and
7. Recognize the legal and ethical issues involved in treating violent individuals, including common mistakes made by clinicians.
