Preventing Child Abuse during Covid 19

I had the opportunity to participate in a webinar recently hosted by Canadian Association of Social Workers @CASW_ACTS in conjunction with Children 1st Canada @children1stca and the Child Welfare League of Canada @CWLC_LBEC

The webinar entitled Protecting Children from Abuse in the midst of the Covid 19 Pandemic included a presentation by Dr. Michelle Ward @mgkward

Dr. Ward and Sara Austin, CEO of Children 1st Canada outlined the state of child welfare in Canada currently and provided many suggestions for how we can act to protect children in spite of social isolation practices during this time.

Here is a link to the entire 1 hour webinar:

Included in the webinar is a short video, produced by the VEGA Project at McMaster University.

The emphasis of VEGA's work is Family Violence as opposed to ACEs, but ACEs are of course embedded in the family violence context.

Language and terminology are always a challenge, especially for those of us in Canada trying to gather forces together to make the changes we know have to happen in our society.

Whatever we call it, family violence, ACEs, child maltreatment, child abuse, child neglect, domestic violence, it all creates unsafe environments for children and adults and needs to be stopped.

Dr. Michelle Ward also produced her own video to help us help kids during this forced period of social isolation.  Her social media campaign encourages us to be #The1Person who asks the child how they're really doing.

Dr. Ward's video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...amp;feature=youtu.be

Many Canadians are producing great work to raise awareness of domestic unsafety to ultimately prevent it.

The more we collaborate together, the stronger our voice will be, to once and for all facilitate changes in policy and practice in our society.
