Hello. It's Wellness Wednesday everyone and we're bringing you a Harvard Business Review article from 5 years ago.
Don't worry, it's relevant for today even more than the author could have imagined at the time.
The author, Mr. Rich Fernandez, was a director of learning and organization development at Google, eBay and J.P. Morgan Chase.
Rich began by writing, "Many of us now work in constantly connected, always-on, highly demanding work cultures where stress and the risk of burnout are widespread. Since the pace and intensity of contemporary work culture are not likely to change, itβs more important than ever to build resilience skills to effectively navigate your worklife."
In the context of the "work from home scenarios" that many people are navigating, some are perhaps much more stressed than they were 5 years ago. Talk about constantly connected, always-on, highly demanding work cultures
His recommendations to deal with the stress of the work environment have been receiving thumbs-up responses from people in the business community today.
"More than five decades of research point to the fact that resilience is built by attitudes, behaviors and social supports that can be adopted and cultivated by anyone. Factors that lead to resilience include optimism; the ability to stay balanced and manage strong or difficult emotions; a sense of safety and a strong social support system. The good news is that because there is a concrete set of behaviors and skills associated with resilience, you can learn to be more resilient."
Fernandez proceeds to support his points with credible research and highlights the role that both managers, leaders and organisations can play in fostering resilience, all the while reiterating the responsibility of each employee.
