International Women's Day (IWD) is a global day observed on March 8 celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.
IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific.
In 2021 the theme is #ChooseToChallenge. Men and women are encouraged to take careful thought of our personal thoughts and actions concerning women's equality. We are urged to choose to seek out and celebrate women's achievements so that we can all help create an inclusive world.
What we at ACES Caribbean take note of is the spate of disrespect, abuse, rape, and murder of our Caribbean women which has worsened due to the lockdowns imposed to combat Covid-19. We are horrified to know that our regional leaders and police officers appear to be incapable of stopping the carnage.
So for #IWD2021, we at ACEs Caribbean #ChooseToChallenge the following:
- the unabated abuse of our Caribbean girls and women.
- the destruction of society while Caribbean Mothers and Daughters Face Generational Trauma.
- the gender earnings gap which relegates women's contributions in the workplace as being less valuable than men's.
- the slow pace at which regional governments are implementing trauma-informed approaches.
We leave you with a powerful conversation starter about #ChooseToChallenge which you can share with your networks.
