July 30 - World Day Against Trafficking In Persons

Hi folks, this Saturday will mark the United Nations World Day Against Trafficking In Persons (WDATIP).

For many of us in the Caribbean, this may bring up thoughts of the horrors of the Transatlantic African Slave Trade and the brutal enslavement of our ancestors. Science has established that the trauma of slavery can be passed on to one's descendants, resulting in collective and generational trauma.

The reality is that the abolition of slavery in the 1830s did not result in the eradication of the crime. It has a new face and name and utilises modern conveniences to attain its nefarious purposes.

This year the focus of WDATIP is on the use of technology by perpetrators in the crime of trafficking in persons as well as by law enforcement to combat the crime.

A brilliant article on WDATIP has been written by Gwendolyn Downing and published here on PACEs Connection. She looks at child trafficking as many children are targeted by traffickers using technology such as social media and constitute a quarter of identified victims of human trafficking globally.

We encourage you to do research on this important topic and read the article by Gwendolyn Downing (see link below).
