Microgrant Moment: Makers Place- YOU FIRST!

Makers Place, launched in July 2018, was founded on the principles of asset-based community development, emphasizing the value of building relationships and fostering a sense of community strength. Instead of focusing on what a community lacks, Makers Place recognizes and celebrates the inherent gifts within each individual. The organization is committed to bringing people together and leveraging community support to create a more unified and empowered environment.

The challenges posed by the pandemic prompted Makers Place to adapt and continue its mission. Traditionally, the organization held bi-monthly meetings where community members would gather to access essential items like diapers. Given that one in three families in Trenton faces the challenge of living at or below the poverty line, these sessions served as a crucial lifeline for families struggling to meet basic needs. Establishing a diaper bank and supplying diapers allowed direct interaction with families and fostered connections.

Callie Crowder, the Executive Director, faced the unique task of connecting with new mothers during the pandemic. Recognizing the importance of personal well-being for single mothers, Crowder, a single mom and CPA, sought to create a supportive space. Outdoor brunches and lunches were initiated to build relationships. Yet, one-on-one interactions proved insufficient to encourage collective gatherings. Understanding the demands and pressures of single mothers, Crowder was personally invested in ensuring that they prioritize self-care.

Makers Place responded by introducing a program that addresses the holistic needs of single mothers, YOUFIRST!, with the help of the NJ Department of Children and Families’ Office of Resilience microgrant. Childcare was incorporated to remove any barriers preventing participation. The program encourages mothers to take time for themselves, fostering group activities such as vision board workshops. By tackling subjects like family dynamics, genograms, parental wounds, shame, and guilt, the YOUFIRST program provides a safe space for mothers to discuss and process often overlooked topics.

The program's success has exceeded expectations, with sessions touching on healing from childhood wounds and addressing invisible pain. Scheduling challenges were met with strategic outreach, including multiple invites and reminders. Crowder actively engages with the community, promoting the program, spreading awareness, and leveraging relationships built over the years.

Makers Place goes beyond conventional community supportβ€”it's a catalyst for positive change and a community counseling conduit. Crowder envisions sustaining the community and exploring additional programs, such as a financial health initiative. Through ongoing collaboration, Makers Place is dedicated to empowering women, fostering meaningful connections, and impacting the lives of everyone it serves.
