Thank you for your interest in the first-ever Turrell Town Hall, a virtual discussion series for Turrell grantees, partners, and networks.
Hosted and moderated by Evan Delgado, Vice President of Programs at the Turrell Fund, this Town Hall will feature Dave Ellis, Executive Director of the Office of Resilience at the New Jersey Department of Children & Families to discuss statewide developments around Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the key role of Turrell affiliates and community-based organizations to inform and participate in making New Jersey a trauma-informed state where children and families can thrive.

What are Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)?
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are stressful or traumatic events that occur before the age of 18. The most commonly cited ACEs include physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect, parental incarceration, domestic violence, household mental illness, household substance misuse, and parental separation or divorce. Over the years, new ACEs have been identified and emphasized, including racism, housing and food insecurity, and other social determinants of health (SDOH). There is increased understanding that systems need to be reformed and made more equitable in order to get to the root of these issues.
ACEs in New Jersey
In July 2019, a major report, "Adverse Childhood Experiences: Opportunities to Prevent, Protect Against, and Heal from the Effects of ACEs in New Jersey" underwritten by the Turrell Fund, the Burke Foundation, and The Nicholson Foundation, identified five areas of opportunity for ACEs further investigation and action in the state of New Jersey.
The report informed the Center for Health Care Strategies, in partnership with Looking Glass Strategy, to use human-centered design to bring together ideas shared by stakeholders from various sectors and communities across the state to develop an ACEs statewide action plan, expected to be released this month.
As of June 2020, national ACEs expert Dave Ellis, the first Executive Director of the Office of Resilience within the New Jersey Department of Children and Families (DCF), is co-leading with DCF Commissioner Christine Norbut Beyer to implement the ACEs statewide action plan with input from other State agencies and the private sector.
